As much as I like Weistling’s period genre recreations, they cannot possibly have any lasting value: they have a cute neoclassical charm but I find his recreation of the 1950s esthetic in his Leave It to Beaver project more convincing (may I dare say less saccharine. If the current market for illustration was any better Weistling would undoubtedly be a current master of the genre.

I disagree compltetely. Morgan is recognized as a Master of the American West artist, with his artwork in the permanent collection of the Autry Western Heritage Museum, and has won many awards including Two Prix De West Purchase Awards from the Cowboy Hall of Fame and Five Patron’s Choice awards from The Master’s of the American West.
Having seen his work in person, and also a demonstration of his technique, I can tell you he is a true master artist with a great gift. His paintings show the spirit of the subjects, as well as being physically beautiful. A good example is “Joy”,which you can see on the website below. His impressionistic style is interesting in that you can actually see more detail further back from the painting than up close. His paintings generally sell by draw, where many people put their names in to buy, and one name is picked to be able to purchase the painting..
I have collectors literally lined up waiting to purchase his paintings, when we are lucky enough to get one from him.
I think his work will last and will be in museums for a long time to come, and he is one of my favorite artists personally..
You can see Joy and more of his work here: http://www.bnr-art.com/weistling
another great painting which won an award in 2011 is Where Stories Were Told–you can see that on the Autry Master’s website here: http://theautry.org/masters-of-the-american-west-2011/morgan-weistling
